What is the MegaETH?

MegaETH is a new high-performance Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) solution. Its standout features are: Transaction Processing Speeds (TPS) exceeding 100,000 and block times of just 10 milliseconds (the lower, the better). Recently, MegaETH has attracted a lot of public interest after launching a unique soulbound (non-tradeable) NFT collection.


The History

MegaLabs, the company that created MegaETH, was established in early 2023 by Shuyao Kong and Yilong Li. Kong, who holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, has experience in business development in the blockchain sector. Before co-founding MegaLabs, she was the global head of business development at ConsenSys, where she still acts as an advisor.

On the other hand, Li, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MegaLabs, earned his PhD in computer science from Stanford University. He is a seasoned software developer and previously worked at Runtime Verification Inc., a company focused on software analysis tools and using formal methods to enhance computing systems.

Kong and Li teamed up to launch MegaLabs in early 2023, combining their skills in business development and computer science to create MegaETH, the first real-time blockchain.

How Does MegaETH Work?

MegaETH’s real-time blockchain scales effectively without compromising decentralization and security through several key components and features.

Node Specialization: MegaETH improves network performance and reduces hardware needs by focusing transaction execution in a limited number of sequencer nodes, while decentralizing block validation across numerous full nodes.


Real-Time EVM: The blockchain’s real-time EVM execution engine handles transactions as they come in, publishing state changes in as little as 10 milliseconds. It utilizes a low-latency, streaming-based block-building algorithm that incorporates a concurrency control protocol with support for transaction prioritization.

In-Memory Computation: In comparison to SSD-based systems, MegaETH speeds up state access by 1,000 times through in-memory computing, keeping the EVM world state and state trie in memory, and enabling the hosting of high-performance, data-heavy Web 2.0 applications.

Smart Contract Compilation: MegaETH enhances performance by up to 100 times by compiling smart contracts into native machine code on the fly using just-in-time (JIT) compilation. This makes it a perfect platform for compute-heavy decentralized applications (DApps), as the real-time blockchain employs a method that removes the inefficiencies tied to interpreting EVM bytecodes and stack machine emulation.


Super I/O-Efficient State Trie: MegaETH substitutes the Merkle Patricia Trie (MPT) with a new design, removing disk I/O bottlenecks while efficiently scaling to terabytes of state data and ensuring EVM compatibility.

State Sync Protocol: With a highly-efficient peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol for low-latency and high-throughput state update propagation, MegaETH allows even nodes with basic internet connections to stay in sync with the latest state at an update rate of up to 100,000 TPS.

Conclusion

Overall, the crypto community on X has mixed feelings about the MegaETH team launching and running an airdrop campaign like this (through NFTs). On one side, the NFT collection is eagerly awaited and offers a refreshing change from the usual not-so-profitable points farming. On the flip side, the NFT mint might come off as a “cash grab,” and a pricey one too, with each NFT priced at 1 ETH ($2800 at the time of writing). That said, the NFT collection is being marketed as a way to raise public funds, with the team clearly stating that there will be a token allocation.

It’s still uncertain whether the team can follow through and fulfill their promises, but having a strong community support could really boost the project’s chances of success.
